An Open Letter From Bill Gates

Melinda and I published our latest Annual Letter this week. It’s a bit of a departure for us. Unlike the past five letters, this one isn’t about the foundation’s work. Instead, we decided to take on some of the myths — about poverty, overpopulation and foreign aid — that are blocking progress for the poor.
For example, many people think development aid is a large part of rich countries’ budgets, which would mean a lot can be saved by cutting back on it. When pollsters ask Americans what share of the budget goes to aid, the average response is 25%. When asked how much the government should spend, people tend to say 10%.
For the United States, the actual number is less than 1%.
One percent of the U.S. budget is about $30 billion per year. Of that, roughly $11 billion is spent on health: vaccines, bed nets, family planning, drugs to keep people with HIV alive, and so on. (The other $19 billion goes to things like building schools, roads and irrigation systems.)

I don’t want to imply that $11 billion per year isn’t a lot of money. But to put it in perspective, it’s about $30 for every American.Imagine your income tax form asked, “Can we use $30 of the taxes you’re already paying to protect 120 children from measles?” Would you check yes or no?
It also helps to look at the overall impact this spending has. To get a rough figure, I added up all the money donors have spent on health-related aid since 1980. Then I divided by the number of children’s deaths that have been prevented in that same time. It comes to less than $5,000 per child saved (and that doesn’t include the improvements in health that go beyond saving the lives of young children).
Five thousand dollars may sound expensive, but keep in mind that U.S. government agencies typically value the life of an American at several million dollars.
Also remember that healthy children do more than merely survive; they go to school and eventually work, and over time they make their countries more self-sufficient. This is why I say aid is such a bargain.

The U.S. government spends more than twice as much on farm subsidies as on health aid. It spends more than 60 times as much on the military. The next time someone tells you we can trim the budget by cutting aid, I hope you will ask whether it will come at the cost of more people dying.

Our Annual Letter addresses some other myths Melinda and I hear a lot, such as, “Aren’t poor countries doomed to stay poor?” “Foreign aid is just a big waste.” And “If fewer poor children die, it will lead to overpopulation.”
These mistaken beliefs block progress for the poor. So, the next time you hear one of these myths, we hope you’ll explain the facts.

Google Glass Developers Strive for Hit Apps

When Google first introduced Glass over a year and a half ago, one question loomed: what kind of apps could make it worth wearing a head-mounted computer everywhere you go?

There's still no good answer for that, in part because Glass is still not publicly available; it is expected to be released sometime this year. However, a select group of developers have had Glass in their hands (and on their heads) for months, and the apps they're developing hint at what they think will make Glass — and other head-worn computers — a mainstream hit.

Some of these apps seek to make technology less distracting (for the wearer, at least, since Glass is hard to ignore on someone's face). Others focus on activities that may be better suited for a computer on your face than a smartphone or a laptop.

Satish Sampath and Kenny Stoltz have created an app called Moment Camera that takes advantage of Glass's five-megapixel camera. The app takes pictures every few seconds when it detects the presence of faces. It uses Glass's accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass to figure out the most opportune time to snap a shot, and later uploads the photos to a remote server and sort outs the ones it believes are the best. "Glass has this sort of built-in awareness that a phone that's in your pocket or sitting face-down on a table doesn't have," Stoltz says.

The benefit is that people would not have to stop what they are doing to take pictures themselves, Stoltz says: "We want to give people back attention."

A similar idea motivates Georgia Tech professor Thad Starner, who is the technical lead on Glass for Google, as he develops an app called Captioning on Glass. It will transcribe the words that someone speaks into a smartphone onto the Glass display of someone with impaired hearing. "By having a head-up display, the wearer can stay 'in the flow' of the conversation, attending the other person's face to get as much information as possible while speeding the natural conversation," he wrote recently for Wired.

While many apps are being newly built for Glass, a number of developers see Glass as an even better way to present apps they previously developed for smartphones, chiefly because its display — equivalent to a 25-inch high-definition display seen from eight feet away — is hands-free and can be ever-present.

Google New Algorithm “Hummingbird”

Google has a new search algorithm, the system it uses to sort through all the information it has when you search and come back with answers. It’s called “Hummingbird” and below, what we know about it so far.

What’s a “search algorithm?”
That’s a technical term for what you can think of as a recipe that Google uses to sort through the billions of web pages and other information it has, in order to return what it believes are the best answers.

What’s “Hummingbird?”
It’s the name of the new search algorithm that Google is using, one that Google says should return better results.

So that “PageRank” algorithm is dead?
No. PageRank is one of over 200 major “ingredients” that go into the Hummingbird recipe. Hummingbird looks at PageRank — how important links to a page are deemed to be — along with other factors like whether Google believes a page is of good quality, the words used on it and many other things (see our Periodic Table Of SEO Success Factors for a better sense of some of these).

Why is it called Hummingbird?
Google told us the name come from being “precise and fast.”

When did Hummingbird start? Today?
Google started using Hummingbird about a month ago, it said. Google only announced the change today.

What does it mean that Hummingbird is now being used?
Think of a car built in the 1950s. It might have a great engine, but it might also be an engine that lacks things like fuel injection or be unable to use unleaded fuel. When Google switched to Hummingbird, it’s as if it dropped the old engine out of a car and put in a new one. It also did this so quickly that no one really noticed the switch.

When’s the last time Google replaced its algorithm this way?
Google struggled to recall when any type of major change like this last happened. In 2010, the “Caffeine Update” was a huge change. But that was also a change mostly meant to help Google better gather information (indexing) rather than sorting through the information. Google search chief Amit Singhal told me that perhaps 2001, when he first joined the company, was the last time the algorithm was so dramatically rewritten.

What about all these Penguin, Panda and other “updates” — haven’t those been changes to the algorithm?
Panda, Penguin and other updates were changes to parts of the old algorithm, but not an entire replacement of the whole. Think of it again like an engine. Those things were as if the engine received a new oil filter or had an improved pump put in. Hummingbird is a brand new engine, though it continues to use some of the same parts of the old, like Penguin and Panda

The new engine is using old parts?
Yes. And no. Some of the parts are perfectly good, so there was no reason to toss them out. Other parts are constantly being replaced. In general, Hummingbird — Google says — is a new engine built on both existing and new parts, organized in a way to especially serve the search demands of today, rather than one created for the needs of ten years ago, with the technologies back then.

What type of “new” search activity does Hummingbird help?
“Conversational search” is one of the biggest examples Google gave. People, when speaking searches, may find it more useful to have a conversation.

“What’s the closest place to buy the iPhone 5s to my home?” A traditional search engine might focus on finding matches for words — finding a page that says “buy” and “iPhone 5s,” for example.

Hummingbird should better focus on the meaning behind the words. It may better understand the actual location of your home, if you’ve shared that with Google. It might understand that “place” means you want a brick-and-mortar store. It might get that “iPhone 5s” is a particular type of electronic device carried by certain stores. Knowing all these meanings may help Google go beyond just finding pages with matching words.

In particular, Google said that Hummingbird is paying more attention to each word in a query, ensuring that the whole query — the whole sentence or conversation or meaning — is taken into account, rather than particular words. The goal is that pages matching the meaning do better, rather than pages matching just a few words.

I thought Google did this conversational search stuff already!

It does (see Google’s Impressive “Conversational Search” Goes Live On Chrome), but it had only been doing it really within its Knowledge Graph answers. Hummingbird is designed to apply the meaning technology to billions of pages from across the web, in addition to Knowledge Graph facts, which may bring back better results.

Does it really work? Any before-and-afters?
We don’t know. There’s no way to do a “before-and-after” ourselves, now. Pretty much, we only have Google’s word that Hummingbird is improving things. However, Google did offer some before-and-after examples of its own, that it says shows Hummingbird improvements.

A search for “acid reflux prescription” used to list a lot of drugs (such as this, Google said), which might not be necessarily be the best way to treat the disease. Now, Google says results have information about treatment in general, including whether you even need drugs, such as this as one of the listings.

A search for “pay your bills through citizens bank and trust bank” used to bring up the home page for Citizens Bank but now should return the specific page about paying bills

A search for “pizza hut calories per slice” used to list an answer like this, Google said, but not one from Pizza Hut. Now, it lists this answer directly from Pizza Hut itself, Google says.

Could it be making Google worse?
Almost certainly not. While we can’t say that Google’s gotten better, we do know that Hummingbird — if it has indeed been used for the past month — hasn’t sparked any wave of consumers complaining that Google’s results suddenly got bad. People complain when things get worse; they generally don’t notice when things improve.

Does this mean SEO is dead?
No, SEO is not yet again dead. In fact, Google’s saying there’s nothing new or different SEOs or publishers need to worry about. Guidance remains the same, it says: have original, high-quality content. Signals that have been important in the past remain important; Hummingbird just allows Google to process them in new and hopefully better ways.

Does this mean I’m going to lose traffic from Google?
If you haven’t in the past month, well, you came through Hummingbird unscathed. After all, it went live about a month ago. If you were going to have problems with it, you would have known by now.

By and large, there’s been no major outcry among publishers that they’ve lost rankings. This seems to support Google saying this is very much a query-by-query effect, one that may improve particular searches — particularly complex ones — rather than something that hits “head” terms that can, in turn, cause major traffic shifts.

But I did lose traffic!
Perhaps it was due to Hummingbird, but Google stressed that it could also be due to some of the other parts of its algorithm, which are always being changed, tweaked or improved. There’s no way to know.

How do you know all this stuff?
Google shared some of it at its press event today, and then I talked with two of Google’s top search execs, Amit Singhal and Ben Gomes, after the event for more details. I also hope to do a more formal look at the changes from those conversations in the near future. But for now, hopefully you’ve found this quick FAQ based on those conversations to be helpful.

The World of SEO after Panda and Penguin Updates

It has been observed and analyzed that the SEO industry seems to be ever-changing. From now onward there will be more challenges to handle the fully optimized websites and online properties in right direction.
Currently, every webmaster is facing the big challenge of getting the natural links and quality content. Everyone is working with the trend of pandas, penguins and more. There will be penalties and algorithms if Google guidelines are not properly followed. Natural Search and Organic SEO values will never lose importance but will have to optimize the sites by being more users friendly.
How to achieve a more successful online platform if you are a Search Engine Optimization Company or consultant building brand for targeted audience? Well, the idea is to optimize the site and convey message more effectively.
Long-term techniques are required to build a fine branded website for business. The site has to be user friendly and efforts should be put for the targeted audience, and not the search engine.
Win Your SEO Game in Search Engines:
1. Developing Descriptive Meta Data and Killer Content
Keep in mind to cover content for your audience and the search engine, figure out how relevant is your page content, only cover few targeted terms and then use them in places that have the most kicks in content.
By developing descriptive and relevant text for your page’s title tags, description and headings texts, make sure that those same words are used again in the body of the page. Never try to stuff keywords in body text. Users search the Web for great content, informative, expert, and creative. It should be different from everyone else – you! There is a powerful impact of video Testimonials in site, users love to see testimonial video before jump and join with your services. Always update your sites on a regular basis with newsletters, blog updates, social identities icons etc.
2. Improve on Page Issues for site crawlability

  • Don’t forget to check duplicate content issues, use canonical tags to prevent duplicate contents and take care about Page load speed.
  • Use 301 Redirection When Redirects Are Needed.
  • Create Custom 404 Error Page, users shouldn’t go away from our error pages.
  • Remove any duplicate, low value and unnecessary pages from search engines.
3.  Building Natural And Relevant Links With Quality & Relevant Sites:-
In the past users were submitting only to a few hundred of your favorite directories to earn links. But now same content can be submitted in many article directories and PR marketing sites. Hidden text, rich snippets spam, cloaking, and paid links are worthwhile efforts. Today, think in terms of quality rather than quantity. We don’t know exactly how ratio search engines are used for good links to junk links. Just try to promote the niches of the Web that are relevant to your website’s targeted audience.

  • Adding a video to our landing page, should be conveying the personality of the service and brand.
  • Every call of action is important in business website so that you don’t lose valuable client on the first step.
  • Engage with customers via social media Platforms, share your company news, run polls and engage with users.
  • Use Social Media Techniques to build your community and connect with fans and potential customers by regularly publishing posts or tweets that may be interesting to your people.
  • Promote your content through guest blogging sites, weekly press release, create Squidoo lenses and hubpages. Don’t use same anchor texts in every place.
  • Be a part of business networking sites and engage with users, get the content for link baiting and create audience who can broadcast your blog or infographics in their network.
  • Use competitor tools to get some more link building ideas.
  • Join the conversation to build some high quality business forums and q/ sites.
  • Run a Facebook and blogging contest

Google Recently Released Google Panda’s Latest Version 3.7

Google Panda 3.7 and Google Penguin 1.1 Algorithm Update on Panda 3.7 — June 8, 2012 | Penguin 1.1 — May 25, 2012 (Advantage Google Panda – Excellent & Quality Content with Less Volume).
Gone are the days when building high volume of work without paying importance on quality was considered ok. But with increasing competition building low-quality link strategies are no longer an ‘in-thing’, resulting in SEO marketers focusing considerably on quality over quantity for building their site links.
Google Panda
Google Panda

  • Many search engines such as Google are paying huge importance on quality for content. Thisincludes links that lead to site content to be of excellent quality and will yield positive response and results to link building campaigns.
  • Google emphasizes more on interaction with visitors with the website content and ensures that a substantial interest is created.
  • Additionally, Google is not bothered about the source of the content as long as it has a strong PR which is relevant to the tastes & interest of the users – the source maybe blogs, article links, any site wide link, etc.
  • Also links coming from irrelevant sites should not be considered at all.
  • Links that lead to spam or resemble spams or sites that are over-advertised should be avoided.
Guest Posting
  • The best way to get access for a post in the Panda World is to post views as guests and also submit opinions for blogs.
  • New content is always in demand by blog owners for their sites and to reach them, it’s necessary to post opinions as a guest writer by including a back link of the site. This will always be welcomed by blog owners.
Create your own Authority Site
  • Effective back linking strategies should be used to create a self authority site by ensuring Panda’s safety. And nothing but only high quality content should be posted on the site, which will lead to money and create a specified rank during the term.
  • After creating high quality site content – several small and free web 2.0 sites can be created with a strong & powerful PR. Blog posts which are linked to social media links or any other new web 2.0 blogs – will ensure tremendous improvement of SERPS.
Deep Linking
  • Majority of bloggers around the world provide a link to their homepage to encourage comments and guest posts. But giving preference to internal pages will increase the interest of their blogs.
  • Providing links to categories that are doing extremely well on the search engine is a good & safe option when enough trafficking is not generated from search engines.
  • A ratio of 60:40 of internal links & home links provides the best and effective results.
What to Avoid
  • Google has included new penalties for few SEO strategies by making changes in their algorithm.
  • With only one anchor text back links can no longer be developed
  • Penalty will be received from Google if it witnesses the usage of bunch of links for the site with the same anchor text.
  • It’s advisable to use terms, including “click here” or “visit now” to gather interest of non-SEO internet users to the website link.
Mass Spamming
  • There is numerous online software’s, which was earlier very successful when launched but now most of them are spams.
  • Just in case even if 15% of links enter the spammed pages either automatically or manually – Google will automatically flag it as a spam website and it will be impossible to recover from that.
So what basically Google Panda wants?
  • Regularly updating blogs with fresh content
  • Providing quality information to capture the attention of readers.
  • Besides quality length of the blog also matters – as too much content results in lack of interest. So an article should not be of more than 500 words.
  • Content should not be twisted for creating backlinks and submitting on web 2.0 article directories.
  • Everything should be well written and described by using apt keywords in the article, including title and headers.
  • Proper and effective sitemap should be constructed on the blog.
  • Loading of pages quickly is very important.
  • Blog should be SEO friendly.
  • Authority backlinks should be created with accurate frequency.
  • Visitors should return frequently.
  • Very low bouncing rate should be there – with a limitation of 404 errors.
  • Authority backlinks with frequency by which you are making backlinks.
Google Penguin
  • It’s advisable to prepare backlinks manually instead of purchasing them.
  • Duplicate content should be strictly avoided
  • Cloaking or hiding of text is never to be practiced
  • All should be White hat
  • Surfing of keywords to be avoided
  • Avoid keyword stuffing

Know more about Facebook Timeline and Your Tabs

Here’s what you need to know about Timeline and your tabs: Your tabs on Static HTML will remain unaffected by the changes, and the new timeline dimensions are now available on all versions of this app.
Landing Tabs
Landing tabs are still alive and well, you can still direct people to tabs created with Static HTML via links that you control, such as Facebook ads (there’s an option for destination tab). But unless the user follows a direct link to your tab, they will land on your Timeline.
Landing Tab Substitutes
Put your landing tab as the first tab after the photos (scroll over the tab icon in your admin panel, and select the second most tabs after Photos to “Swap position with”. (Photos is Facebook’s default first tab, currently you can’t change it). – Pin your call to action and include a link to your actual landing tab. To pin a status, (1) post your status, then (2) scroll over the status and in the upper right click “Pin to Top.”
Dimensions
All Static HTML tabs can now be 810 pixels wide when used on a Timeline page. To adapt a 520 pixel tab, all you need to is convert your page to timeline, then go to your tab and re-save it.
Like gating
Like gating still exists within tabs, but currently Facebook doesn’t refresh the tab after someone likes it. It is unclear whether this is a bug or a new policy — we’re keeping an eye on it. If it isn’t a bug, we will build a workaround that will be available by default within Static HTML.
Custom Icon
On Timeline pages you can now also select a bigger custom icon for tabs (111×74 pixels) through Facebook itself. To do this, go to your page > Edit Info > Apps > Edit Settings > Change Icon (here you’ll upload an image) – We’re researching ways to change the icon directly in the app, to provide simpler organization of all pages you admin.
